Cactus pear has gained an important place in the agricultural systems as a source of forage, particularly in subsistence agriculture where cactus has a comparative advantage for its capacity to grow with minimal agronomic inputs as well as for its resistance to drought.

Cactus is offered to livestock in different ways including green forage, hay, silage and cactus based feed block. With high amount of water content cactus could be a good option to solve the problem of animal dehydration in the dry areas.
